Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion Spring/Summer 2012

Amazing news for upcoming designers who are seeking to enter and capture the market – GenArt is back. For those of you not familiar with this great organization, Gen Art is a national organization dedicated to showcasing emerging fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians and visual artists. During New York Fashion Week, we got to see collections from seven fashion designers (William Okpo, Ace & Jig, Sunghee Bang, Baron Wells, Eighteenth, Jennifer Chun and Ann Yee) and four Accessories designers (Collina Strada, Falconiere, Osborn and Wool and the Gang).

William Okpo

Though this duo, sisters Darlene and Lizzy Okpo, showed a variety of looks, I fell in love with their tailored looks, particularly their pants. The collection from these Gen Art alumni designers featured modern feminine looks with masculine structure – favorites include the White Cape Shirt, Chambray Overalls and the Pink Button Up with Pinstripe Shorts.

Ace & Jig

Believe it or not, each look by this designer is made from a fabric they created. The idea behind the yarn-dye woven fabric was to create effortless clothes where the fabric could speak for itself.

Sunghee Bang

The process of getting lost in the chaos of life and how we get tangled in knots is the inspiration for this eclectic collection. I especially love the wildness of the graphic print which adequately portrays the stress of daily life.

Baron Wells

Named “the next big thing in menswear” by refinery29.com, Baron Wells’s collection featured effortless and easy menswear – the modern nomad with minimalist style.

Eighteenth

This collection called “I gained 10 Pounds, but grew 10 inches” features over-sized t-shirts and denim jackets, extra wide skirts and denim shorts, extra long sleeves, and lots of asymmetrical silhouettes.

Jennifer Chun

One of my two favorite collections of the night; I loved her mix of structured silhouettes with unconventional touches. Her collection was feminine with a mix of classic and modern chic.

Ann Yee

My other favorite collection from the show, I love her use of geometric shapes, asymmetrical silhouettes and playfulness. Her collection was sweet with a touch of sophisticated whimsy.
