Nautica Fall 2012 Collection - Mission to Please

Nautica is on a mission. A mission to charm the same hearts that Sir Lauren charmed many years ago by making Polo into a certifiable household name. What David Chu started years ago as a delving into his love for fun & classic American sportswear, Chris Cox is now cultivating into a brand that takes the same honed aesthetic of American sportswear translated for a generation of men with less rules and greater diversified life encounters.

What strikes me as key about many designers with a keen foresight for greatness is their reliance on continuity. Continuity is key to establishing a lasting impression and follows a basic framework that can be tweaked here and there for modernity. However, it's that continuity through construction, advertising images, quality and fit that leave a commanding presence on the minds of the consumers which they can recognize season after season while still moving along with a brand's growth.

The in-store presence of Nautica is vast. That is the key to understanding Nautica's approach. They reach a lot of men throughout the nation with an aesthetic that is essentially and classically American. With this in mind, the brand doesn't really need to reinvent the wheel every time at bat. What it needs to do and what it does well is connect that continual presence of triumphant sportswear with the essence of an American man's way of life. This is why the brand's past advertising images and the selection of the models for the Fall/Winter 2012 presentation all convey strong boy next door, quarterback, active American male personas that live in our minds and subtly make men seek out these kinds of clothes in their shopping escapades.

The collection Nautica presented during fashion week was littered with a welcomed and growing continuation of what the brand bumped up for Spring 2012. Color! Vibrant color is something designers usually relegate to spring to kind of imitate the foliage and sunlight while keeping their fall winter accessories more "springily/summerly" inspired. However, while sticking to its sportswear strengths, Nautica suggested that a broader consensus of men should create their own rules and pay homage to the brighter, warmer seasons in the grayer colder months of the year. Still this is also a business which exists to make a profit, so it still caters to those men who are slower to adapt to change by offering their classic staples of cable knit sweaters, wash & wear shirtings, loden coats, puffer vests and pea coats in classic American navies, varsity blues, collegiate greys and New England whites. My favorite pieces of the collection were the elegantly tailored heavier weighted wool blazers with a bit more shaping. Also of note were the modern shoes that took inspiration from menswear lore in herringbones and flannels in mute tones that leave the canvas crystal clear for the poppier tones of some of the outerwear.

Another good thing to note about Nautica is that since it does have a nationwide retail presence, intermediate deliveries will be peppered with color all throughout the season. This in turn sinks it deeper into the psyche of the male consumer that color is welcomed and OK anytime time of the year.

Jill Stuart Fall 2012 Collection

Unlike her Spring 2012 collection which was full of vivid colors and playful personality, Jill Stuart's 2012 Collection was morose and much more sullen which is understandable because this season's collection was inspired "the dark, magical world of Nick Cave's women". Nick Cave is an Australian musician, songwriter, author, screenwriter, etc whose "music is generally characterized by emotional intensity, a wide variety of influences, and lyrical obsessions with "religion, death, love, America, and violence". The women in his life are generally described as enigmatic and blasé and this personality trait is what inspired this collection.

The darker hued looks (which included bordeaux, chocolate, grape, navy, etc) featured dark floral prints and an interesting print consisting of a trio of paint splotches), muted colors, sheer and lace inserts, rhinestones which were placed in amazing swirled designs on sheer dresses and blouses and turtlenecks - several of which were layered under dresses.

Juicy Couture Plays Cupids for Valentine's Day

Juicy Couture teamed up with the Thompson Hotels for an amazing and delightful cause. Gorgeous Male “Couture Cupids” will brighten the day of hundreds of strangers today, Valentine’s Day, with their “Everybody Loves a Valentine” campaign, taking place in New York City. handing out Valentine’s Day notes to the public around New York City benefiting loveisrespect.org

Leading up to February 14th, Juicy Couture will presented guests staying at 60 Thompson in SoHo with a blank card on which to write a love note to a stranger. Then, they were able to take their note into the nearest Juicy Couture store where they received a special goodie bag. On Valentine’s Day, dapper “cupids” will deliver these love notes to strangers in surprise locations around the city. One lucky recipient will receive a $500 gift card to shop at Juicy Couture and a two night stay at Hotel Victor in Miami.

In addition to creating happiness for hundreds of strangers, for each card written by the 60 Thompson guests, Juicy Couture will donate $1 to loveisrespect.org. The online initiative brings together Break the Cycle and The National Dating Abuse Helpline to engage, educate, and empower teens and young adults to prevent and end abusive relationships.

Katya Leonovich Fall 2012 Presentation

New fabulous designer alert! - I added another new designer to my list, Katya Leonovich. Stepping just a bit away (but not too far) from her initial American Football-inspired debut collection, Katya Leonovich's Fall 2012 featured her usual "beautiful garbage" style but several looks had more structure. We saw the usual frenzied color combinations (more appropriately...watercolors as she is a painter), edgy details and embellishments, daring mixed fabrications and textures (hello snakeskin and organza) and lots of architectural details.

The architectural details are no surprise as this collection titled, "An Architectural Aesthetic", was inspired by the designer's point of view of the famous architecture of New York City's buildings. We got to see this inspiration in her paintings which hung over the models during the presentation

My personal favorite looks from this collection are featured below - I love the combination of in-your-face edginess, a touch of femininity and disciplined structure featured in the looks

Fashion Week is a great time to discover up and coming designer. Sometimes a fresh perspective or point of view is a necessity to revive your love of fashion and this is what discovering Monika Chiang's Fall 2012 Collection did for me. Inspired by the "jolt to the senses experienced when seemingly contradictory elements combine in unexpected ways.....". Her clothing collection featured sharp, tailored looks, lots of leather, mixed fabrications, pieces trimmed with zippers and fur and her signature leather leggings. Favorite details included two-toned gloves, a leather scarf, a gorgeous full length leather skirt with side zipper detail which led to a thigh slit, a chic bomber jacket with a fur shawl trim

Her footwear and accessories collection was where her chic edginess really shined - gorgeous leather spats paired with pumps, boots with lots pf personality and embellishments, box-shaped clutches featured metal fringe and a very mouth dropping pump with a bent metal spike heel

BCBG Max Azria Fall 2012 Collection

At the BCBG Fall Collection Show, color-blocking is here to stay with a very firm grip. The trend, which has been a multi-season favorite, were seen in flowing dresses and asymmetrically skirts, large envelope clutches, leather jackets and fur pieces implemented into outerwear

Softness and femininity flowed throughout the collection with such details as intricate and flowy pleats, geometric shapes, mixed fabrications, sheer paneling, and a bold color palette of navy, rust, ivory and taupe punctuated with brilliant color inclusions of coral, cobalt blue, teal, bordeaux, mustard and kelly green.

The collection was inspired by Bauhaus - Germain paintings from a 1900's art school that created the melding of fine arts and crafts into design. The collection's longer silhouette added sophistication and grace to the collection, making it a great followup to their Spring 2012 looks.

It is day two of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week (technically it's day 3 for me) and I'm already feeling the effects on my body. You've heard of Tennis Elbow, I'm suffering from Gift bag Shoulder. My shoulders are in pain and foot pain is already getting my attention. Luckily, Kmart is coming to the rescue with a Fashion Week Survival Kit. The Heart Truth's Red Dress Collection Fashion Show

Celebrities once again came together to help raise awareness for the #1 killer of women - Heart Disease. Amazing women such as Linda Evans, Christie Brinkley, Chaka Khan, Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Nettles and others, strutted the runway at the Red Dress fashion show for The Heart Truth campaign in gorgeous red frocks from such designers as Badgley Mischka, Tadashi Shoji, Pamella Roland, Roberto Cavalli, DVF, Marchesa, etc.

Celebrating it's tenth anniversary this year, The Red Dress Heart Truth fashion show uses the red dress as it's national symbol for heart disease awareness among women.

Despite a couple of stumbles, the show was electric with many of the ladies dancing a having a bit of fun on the runway. One of my favorite moments from the actual show was when Debbie Phelps kissed her son and daughter as she reached the top of the runway.

During the cocktail reception, women were asked to write things that would do to support and ensure heart health on red heart shaped post-it notes which were then displayed. The message and the result were beautiful.

The Heart Truth partnered with Million Hearts, a national initiative aiming to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017.

Super Bowl Champion New York Giants' Victor Cruz Kicks Off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

With a opening statement that he lost his voice at the Super Bowl parade on Tuesday, Super Bowl Champs Giants' wide receiver, Victor Cruz was on hand to cut the ribbon to officially open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center yesterday(I give him major kudos for doing this without a coat on as the temp dropped to the low 30's). Cruz was joined by Stephanie Winston-Wolkoff, Director of Fashion at Lincoln Center, Peter Levy, SVP and Managing Director at IMG Fashion, Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton, Naeem Khan, this season’s Mercedes-Benz Presents Designer, and Lisa Holladay, Manager of Brand Experience Marketing, Mercedes-Benz USA.

“It’s an honor to be here to help kick off Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York,” said Cruz. “It’s been quite an incredible week for the City—our Super Bowl win, the great homecoming parade yesterday, and now the beginning of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. ABC Family & Bloomingdale's Fashion Week Kick-Off

To kick off Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Bloomingdales 59th Street and Erica Dasher and Andie MacDowell from ABC Family new hot show, Jane by Design, was on hand to celebrate the new season of fashion with a Pop-Up Fashion Exhibit inspired by the amazing wardrobes of the Jane by Design stars. Joining Erica Dasher and Andie MacDowell was one of my favorite designers, the amazing Nanette Lepore.

Degen Fall/Winter 2012 Collection

Designer Lindsay Degen presented a collection of colorful striped pieces inspired by the image of "dazzle ships" - very brightly colored, sliced geometric designed ships that made it difficult to align split screen range finders, as well as fake bows that made it difficult to gauge speed and heading. She wanted to mimic the patterns on ships using complex knit structures, which in turn camouflaged the knitting to look like more of a bold, all-over printed surface. "The collection called "Ask Tell", celebrates the more open-minded policy. She set out to make a collection that references military themes while commending the idiosyncratic, quirky and even Queer", celebrating the queerness in all people as a salute to the importance of the individual.

Her collection included knit pants with cutouts and crochet details, oversized hats crocheted from hand-spun merino wool, angora ridged knit tops with short row lace, racked rib dresses in cashmere, hand silk screen printed t-shirts, plated knits pants.

The shoes shown with Degen Fall / Winter 2012 "Ask Tell" featured knitted elements paired with leather and pony hair; the platform sneakers featured hand drawn pattern work by downtown artist RJ Raizk. Degen brought knitting to footwear as seen on various sections of the shoes along with the incorporation of knitted shoe laces. Additionally shoes featured (in classic Degen style) target-specific cut outs which served to reveal Degen's trademark mis-matched socks.

Hilary Park's Spring 2012 Jewelry Collection - Divination

I went out of my event comfort zone and headed to Williamsburg, Brooklyn to get a peek at the new Spring 2012 jewelry collection from designer, Hilary Park, and it was completely worth it. For Spring 2012, Lands End Canvas takes you on a favorite summer activity - the road trip. Discover the great influences along route 66 and beyond as Lands End Canvas takes you on a fashion journey from Paris to San Juan, Napa and Baja. Displayed in different vignettes, the All-American collection featured the brand's usual layering as well as nautical stripes, plaid, gingham, khaki, easy knits, this summer's staple - eyelets, and more.

The entire collection oozed easy, classic simplicity and comfort without being too boring. I especially loved the belted dresses - the bold prints, the sweet silhouettes, etc. I loved the unexpected surprise of polka dot underneath the navy drawstring dress. I'm always a fan of the Lands End Canvas accessories and quite a few caught my attention. I also fell madly in love with the crotcheted knit bag featured in the first photo collage above. Other cool accessories included colorful skinny braided belts, wide brimmed hats, fedoras, small cross-body bags, colorful ties for men (which I've always loved to use as belts).

Lands End Canvas featured two forms of entertainment, first was the live artwork on one section of the event space by art students from the School of Visual Arts, who painted non-stop throughout the entire event.

Second was a live performance by Boston-based band, The Wandas, who entertained the crowd beyond the end of the event.

Expect to see some of these looks online and in-stores starting this month.

M&M's Reveals New Character, Ms. Brown

Finally coming out from the behind-the-scenes after seven decades, M&M's Boss Lady aka Chief Chocolate Officer, Ms. Brown, is finally ready to let the world get to know her. Hidden behind an oversized package of M&M’S Milk Chocolate Candies at M&M’S World in Times Square (located at 1600 Broadway in NYC), a 10ft high statue of Ms. Brown was revealed to excited cheers from M&M fans and staff.

Ms. Brown is sassy and smart and is a lover of sophistication as is evident by her chocolate-colored Marc Jacobs designed glasses and Judith Ripka glove links. Ms. Brown will make her official national debut in an M&M's commercial airing during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLVI this Sunday. Following the successful launch of products like M&M’S Pretzel Chocolate Candies, as well as witnessing the admiration her fellow characters enjoy from fans around the world, Ms. Brown decided now was the time to come out from behind-the-scenes and remind the world that M&M’S are not your average milk chocolate.

With the reveal of M&M's Chief Chocolate Officer, a new collection of Ms. Brown inspired attire was also unwrapped. The collection included t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, racer-back tanks, canvas bags, and of course, M&M candies.

At the event, I met a true fan of M&M's Chocolates, she goes to every M&M's launch event, buys all the new merchandise and is a die-hard fan of all thing M&M's, so of course Ms. Karen Axel-Knispel was in attendance wearing her brown M&M t-shirt, M&M Jacket, M&M tote bag, brown nail polish with little m's on each nail.

She was the first person to get to the new merchandise racks when they were open to the public - as I said a die-hard fan. But back to Ms. Brown, remember to keep an eye out for the the latest M&M character as she comes out from behind-the-scenes to make her debut during the first quarter of Super Bowl XLVI.

Forget the 80's, it was all about the 90's as guests and 90's icons helped Avon ANEW celebrate their 20th Anniversary. Guests took a walk down memory lane back to 1992, the year ANEW launched. The event was a true flashback to the 90’s, complete with 90’s memorabilia (I am obsessed with the Slap Bracelet), 90's sweet treats, the hottest 90's music, as well as special appearances from supermodel and ANEW spokesperson, Paulina Porizkova and 90’s TV icon, Alfonso Ribeiro (aka Carlton Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air!).

I love being introduced to new designers and was excited to get acquainted with FIT alum, April Mun's Stella & Jamie Spring 2012 Collection. The collection features pieces that are sexy, edgy, flirty and chic

This playfully chic collection features classic and clean looks with unique touches. I fell in love with their color blocked dresses, animal prints, adorable tweed, pleats and distressed leather looks. Some of my favorite looks are featured above, clockwise - Sierra Trench, Sierra Blazer, Cairo Mini Dress, Azania Top (I love the sheer panel on the black), and the very chic Pala Back Dress.

Other must haves include the above Lagos Distressed leather Jacket and Addis Jacket. Celebrities love Stella & Jamie, some of the 2012 collection has already been seen on Brandy, Fergie, Minnie Driver, Tiffany Hines, etc

Gen Art New Garde Announces NYFW Designer Line-Up

Gen Art, newly partnered with Crest 3D White has announced the designer line-up for its annual New Garde Fashion Show to be held the first day of New York Fashion Week. The runway show, which starts at 6pm and is being hosted by Emmanuelle Chriqui, features the A/W12 collections from the most promising emerging designers including Gemma Kahng, Samantha Pleet and William Okpo (whose collection I previous featured in my Gen Art Fresh Faces in Fashion Spring/Summer 2012 post).

The event starts with a Cocktail reception at 5pm with DJ Harley Viera-Newton of Roc Nation providing the soundtrack for the evening. Known for helping to launch the careers of designers such as Zac Posen, Rodarte, Rebecca Taylor, Phillip Lim, Raquel Allegra, Vena Cava, Dannijo and Erik Hart, Gen Art is excited to be able to continue offering emerging designers the opportunity to show at Fashion Week. Several Gen Art alumni have gone on to win the coveted CFDA emerging designer award and won the Emmy Award nominated "Project Runway" after their debut with Gen Art.

"Gen Art New Garde provides today's rising designers with a few years of experience under their belts a platform to show their collection on the runway during New York Fashion Week at no charge," Says Elizabeth Shaffer, Co-President of Gen Art. Guess Spring/Summer 2012 Footwear and Handbag Collection

There were so many great pieces at the Guess Spring/Summer 2012 preview that I had to do two posts; my first Guess Spring/Summer 2012 Collection post featured clothing, jewelry and watches, this one is all about shoes and handbags. For the footwear collection, Guess and Guess by Marciano featured lots of colors, color blocking and contrast color, mixed prints (love the snakeskin and denim print stiletto with the ankle buckle), and modern silhouettes

We see bold personality in the Guess handbag collection - lots of contrasting color. A favorite among several of the preview's attendees was the herringbone group (featured directly below) - I love the idea of using color contrast basket weave to create the herringbone effect.

Another favorite was the handbag group with contrast piping, we especially fell in love with the grey bowler with seafoam handles and piping. The hardware adds a bit of edge to this modern silhouette. Of course bold colors are continued on into the handbag collection - we see red, cobalt blue, coral, rich caramel, etc. Keep an eye out for these eye-catching accessories as they will be available in stores soon. I can't wait for spring.

Saivana Spring 2012 Collection

During the warmer seasons, there is nothing I love more than wearing a beautiful, long ethereal dress. I feel quite enchanting and feminine when wearing these romantic dresses so discovering the exquisite looks from Saivana was a wonderful thrill. Not familiar with Saivana, you should be; they offer a beautiful, elegant collection that includes soft, comfortable and breezy silk and chiffon dresses, tunics, blouses and scarves - in other words, they offer romance for your wardrobe. For Spring 2012, Saivana offers a few playful prints, their signature embroidery, intricate beading, soft silhouettes and shape flattering fabrics in their very feminine collection. My absolute favorite is the Lace Pastiche Dress, a gorgeous semi-sheer all white beauty with a bodice trimmed with neutral fabric patches (I need this dress in my life).

I had the pleasure of previewing the Helios & Luna Spring 2012 Collection from designer Patricia Clyne, a collection filled with color, classic feminine shapes, modern and luxe silhouettes. Her looks were all very chic and highlighted the details and shapes

When asked about her spring collection, Particia stated, "Spring is about colors and being comfortable wearing colors. Strong color. The mixing of colors, complimentary colors like magenta and the sunset, the golden rod, the orange and the azure and the spring green. Also, the graphic quality of black and white the positive and the negative of all colors it is a timeless combo and it looks better than ever when mixed in the same garment."

"It's about shapes that are fresh and new, yet have a timeless quality. The sheath, done in a new way, the blouse done a new way and an importance in a women's vocabulary that she is comfortable trying a new shape in a blouse for instance."

One of my favorite looks from her collection was the below pintuck sheath dress (available in gold and charcoal) - whether it's on a mannequin or on a model, it looks very chic. The fit is just about perfect.

A lucky few (sadly not I - a drawback to living on the Eastcost only) got the chance to enjoy a private dinner with NIKE Athlete and Gold Medalist, Jason Richardson. This exclusive dinner was held at the very chic and intimate Waterloo and City Restaurant (voted best new restaurant of 2011 by LA Mag) on January 10th, to celebrate Jason's world championship victory and to toast to his London 2012 Olympic bid.

For those of you not int he know, Jason beat the fastest three men in history in the 110M hurdles last year and was covered in Sport's Illustrated's "US Olympians" Then and Now" feature. He is definitely one to watch!
