Academy of Art Fall 2010 Show

San Francisco based fashion school, Academy of Art has been showcasing their graduates’ designs during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. This season, six womenswear lines were featured from the Fashion, Knitwear, Technical and Textile Design programs. We saw collections from Marina Solomatnikova (MFA Fashion Design), Bethany Meuleners (MFA Fashion & Knitwear Design), Naomi Sutton (MFA Fashion & Textile Design), Hyo Sun (Nicky) An (MFA Fashion Design), Steven Oo (MFA Fashion & Knitwear Design) and Sabah Mansoor Husain (MFA Fashion & Knitwear Design).

Out of the six collections, only two weren’t my taste but I was very impressed with the future of fashion just from seeing these collections. First was the updated “Out of Africa” looks from Russian-born Marina Solomtnikova. I loved the color and fabrication – pale grey and beige suedes mixed with silks and her use of pleating

Second was Bethany Meuleners, who was born on base at West Point. I was sure this would mean her collection would be quite structured but was surprised to see soft flowing knits and wovens. Her bio said her inspiration was a young girl playing dress up and that is exactly what I got from it

Third on the list and my least favorite was the collection by Naomi Sutton. Not sure about anyone else but I immediately thought of Amish or Alter Boy couture, not something I’d wear anywhere. The collection consisted of over-shirts and dresses

Fourth and tied to be my favorite collection from this graduating class is from Korean-born designer, Hyo Sun (Nicky) An. I love how her looks are all clean lines but then made fabulous and special with the cords/ropes. My favorite pieces are below. I’d wear any of these right now

The fifth designer was my second favorite and it comes from the only male designer, Steven Oo. What caught my eye were the cutout details on his merino wool pieces, the texture of the chunky and weighty sweaters. I loved it all. My favorite piece is directly below – sexy, stylist and comfortable

Lastly, there is Bangalore born designer, Sabah Mansoor Husain. Although this is one of the collections I don’t consider my taste, it’s not to say that I didn’t appreciate it’s beauty or get the designer’s message. This collection is very fashion forward and I can definitely see someone like Rihanna wearing and loving it. I’m sure to see this designer on the pages of V Magazine or Italian Vogue soon

See the designers with their collections in the finale video below

I also discovered One Eighty Magazine at the Academy of Art show, “One Eighty is a student-produced publication showcasing work from alumni and students in different areas of study at the Academy of Art”
